William poses a question as to a teacher's responsibility with regard to climate change.

Should teachers introduce the idea of climate change into their various lessons? What are some of the pros and cons with regard to the teaching of climate change? Is climate change truly an issue? Are teachers morally and professionally obligated to teach about topics of universal concern? How does your district’s curriculum incorporate and implement climate change learning standards?

  1. Surprisingly, Sisters of Mercy, which is the order of our school, focuses on climate change, recycling, and providing a just and inclusive world. While I do not know if the exact topic of climate change should be presented, children should certainly learn about taking care of our planet, animals, each other, and living a healthy life. I believe some topics in the curriculum could be part of an overreaching objective.

  2. I think it is important to introduce the topic of climate change into various lessons. As the article from nj.com states, it is also important that this information is presented at developmentally appropriate times. Children should be informed on how their actions and future actions have an impact on the environment. Introducing topics, such as recycling, at an early age can help students develop habits early on and help them to be more mindful. Going outside the classroom to learn about some of these issues also helps students to see real-world examples and applications that would be more meaningful and impactful. The district that I completed my student teaching in last year discussed recycling and helping the planet and had one day where the class went outside to clean up the school playground and see how much trash had been left.
